Joint Compound (Drywall Mud) Calculator
Estimate joint compound gallons, whole containers and material cost using your product’s coverage.
Measure each wall or ceiling face receiving the finish once. Enter a product-specific usage rate, add separately estimated work if needed, and choose waste and net container volume. Hidden drywall layers do not automatically double the finishing quantity.
Measure the wall and ceiling faces receiving this finish once. Do not multiply by hidden drywall layers or by finish coats already included in the product’s joint-finishing coverage.
The editable 9.4 US gal per 1,000 sq ft example comes from USG Sheetrock Midweight product data (J963). Replace it with the rate for your product and work. It is not a universal finish-level or skim-coat yield.
Additional compound is a separate, pre-waste quantity for skim coating, repairs or specified base-layer treatment not covered by your rate. Leave blank only when no extra work is needed or it is already included. Estimate different products separately. Use the labeled net US gallons, not nominal bucket size or dry-powder weight.
Your Estimate
Base Joint-Finishing Compound
9.40 US gal
Additional Compound
0.00 US gal
Waste Allowance (10%)
0.94 US gal
Total Compound Needed
10.34 US gal
Containers to Purchase
3 containers
Purchased Volume
13.50 US gal
Container quantities use unrounded totals and round up to whole containers. Cost includes only the entered compound price, excluding tax, delivery, tape, tools and labor. The 10% waste default is editable, not a manufacturer requirement.

Inputs That Control a Drywall Mud Estimate
The editable 9.4 US gal per 1,000 sq ft example is from USG Sheetrock Midweight product data J963. It is not a universal yield by finish level or a skim-coat allowance. Check the exact product and application.
How to Use the Joint Compound (Drywall Mud) Calculator
- 1Add the wall and ceiling areas being finished. Count each exposed face once.
- 2Enter your product usage in US gallons per 1,000 sq ft. If coverage is C sq ft per gallon, enter 1,000 / C.
- 3Add separately estimated gallons for skim coats, repairs or specified base-layer treatment only when excluded from the base rate. Estimate different products separately.
- 4Choose your waste percentage; 10% is an editable planning default.
- 5Enter the container’s labeled net US gallons, including fractional sizes.
- 6Optionally enter the price per container and review whole-container quantity and cost.
Joint Compound Formulas
- 1Base gallons = finished surface area × product usage rate / 1,000.
- 2Pre-waste gallons = base gallons + additional compound gallons.
- 3Waste gallons = pre-waste gallons × waste percentage / 100.
- 4Total gallons = pre-waste gallons + waste gallons.
- 5Containers = total gallons / net container volume, rounded up.
- 6Material cost = whole containers × price per container.
Example Calculation
For 1,000 sq ft at an example rate of 9.4 US gal per 1,000 sq ft, base compound is 9.4 US gal. With no additional work and 10% waste, the total is 10.34 US gal. Divide by 4.5 US gal per container and round up to 3 containers, providing 13.5 US gal. At a hypothetical $24 each, compound costs $72 before tax or delivery.
Accuracy & Assumptions
- Count the faces actually being finished, not all installed sheets in a multilayer assembly.
- Do not multiply again by the number of coats already included in the selected rate.
- Finish level defines the required treatment, not a universal gallons-per-square-foot yield.
- Extra work must be estimated separately unless the usage rate already includes it.
- Additional compound is assumed to be the same product and receives the selected waste percentage.
- Purchase quantities use unrounded totals; displayed gallons are rounded to two decimals.
- Dry powder weight cannot be converted to premixed gallons without manufacturer yield data.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much joint compound do I need for 1,000 square feet?
At the example 9.4 US gal per 1,000 sq ft rate and 10% waste, allow 10.34 US gal, or three 4.5-US-gallon containers. Replace the rate for your product and add work excluded from its coverage.
Does a second drywall layer double the mud?
Not automatically. Estimate the exposed finishing faces once. Follow the tested assembly or project specification for any concealed-layer joint treatment and estimate that work separately.
Does the calculator include Level 5 skim coating?
Only if your entered rate already includes it or you add a separate skim-coat quantity. Do not assume the example joint-finishing rate includes a full-surface skim coat.
How do I enter coverage in square feet per gallon?
Divide 1,000 by that coverage to obtain US gallons per 1,000 sq ft. For example, 100 sq ft per gallon becomes 10 US gal per 1,000 sq ft.
Is a five-gallon bucket always five gallons of compound?
Use the labeled net contents. A container sold as a bucket may contain 4.5 gallons or another amount. Use product-specific volume; do not substitute pounds.
Can I use this for dry setting compound?
This tool purchases containers by US gallons. Estimate dry-bag products separately using their published yield and bag size; there is no universal pounds-to-gallons conversion.
Planning estimate only. Confirm product yield, net container volume, finish specification and any tested-assembly requirements before ordering. Compound cost excludes tape, tools, labor, tax and delivery.
