Siding Calculator

Estimate siding coverage, purchasing units, trim pieces, waste and optional material cost from wall and gable measurements.

Estimate siding from simple building dimensions or measured wall and gable areas. Subtract confirmed openings, add a project-specific waste allowance and divide by the exact product’s published effective coverage per purchasing unit. Optional trim inputs estimate starter strip, J-channel and corner-post pieces from user-entered runs, counts and stock lengths.

Measurement System

Exterior Wall Measurements

The simple-dimensions method assumes two length walls, two width walls and equal rectangular wall height. Gables must have matching dimensions; do not multiply separately averaged bases and rises. Use measured-area mode for additions, offsets, mixed heights, dormers or other complex elevations.

Siding Product

Replace the example coverage with the effective coverage for the exact carton, panel, bundle or package you will buy. Keep coverage and price in the same purchasing unit.

Trim and Accessories

Enter measured trim runs from a project-specific elevation sketch. Enter each independent run separately, using commas or new lines; enter 0 for no trim. Waste is applied once per run before rounding up. Offcuts are not reused across runs. Use usable installed coverage per stock piece after any required laps. The calculator does not infer opening perimeters or gable rake trim.

Corner posts use wall height in dimensions mode and the entered common corner height in measured-area mode. Corners must have equal heights; estimate differing heights separately. Corner pieces round up per corner without trim waste or offcut sharing. Usable stock length must reflect approved joints and laps; this is not an installation design.

The priced subtotal includes only quantities with entered prices. Blank prices, labor, tax, delivery, repairs and unlisted materials are excluded.

Starter strip and J-channelLinear trim measured from the actual base course, openings, rakes and terminations
Corner postsCount inside and outside corners separately and divide wall height by usable post length

The loaded dimensions, coverage and trim runs are editable examples, not product specifications or a complete elevation takeoff. Replace them with field measurements and current manufacturer information.

How to Use the Siding Calculator

  1. 1Choose simple dimensions for a rectangular building or measured-area mode for complex elevations.
  2. 2Enter wall dimensions or total wall area, then add triangular gable and dormer areas.
  3. 3Enter the measured area of windows, doors and other confirmed deductions.
  4. 4Enter the selected siding product’s effective coverage per purchasing unit and choose a waste allowance.
  5. 5Measure starter strip, J-channel and corner-post requirements from an elevation sketch and enter usable stock lengths. Enter independent starter and J-channel runs separated by commas or new lines, or 0 for no trim.
  6. 6Optionally enter current per-unit prices, then review net area, siding squares, whole product units, trim pieces and estimated material cost.

Siding and Trim Formulas

  1. 1Rectangular wall area = 2 × (building length + building width) × wall height in simple-dimensions mode.
  2. 2Total gable area = number of matching gables × gable base width × gable rise ÷ 2.
  3. 3Gross exterior area = rectangular wall area + gable area.
  4. 4Net siding area = gross exterior area − confirmed opening deductions.
  5. 5Waste-adjusted siding area = net siding area × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100).
  6. 6Siding squares = waste-adjusted siding area ÷ 100 sq ft. Metric mode uses the 9.290304 m² equivalent for reference.
  7. 7Siding purchasing units = waste-adjusted area ÷ published effective coverage per unit, rounded up.
  8. 8Starter strip or J-channel pieces = sum of each independent run × (1 + trim waste ÷ 100) ÷ usable stock length, rounded up per run. Zero runs add no pieces; offcuts are not shared.
  9. 9Corner-post pieces = corner count × (common corner height ÷ usable stock length, rounded up per corner). Dimensions mode uses wall height; measured-area mode requires a separate common corner height. Trim waste does not apply to posts.
  10. 10Priced materials subtotal = each whole product quantity × its entered price. Blank prices, labor, tax, delivery, repairs and unlisted materials are omitted.

Example Calculation

Imperial example: a 40 ft × 30 ft rectangular building with 10 ft walls has 1,400 sq ft of rectangular wall area. Two 30 ft-wide gables rising 6 ft add 180 sq ft. Subtract 220 sq ft of measured openings for 1,360 sq ft net. With 10% waste, plan for 1,496 sq ft, or 14.96 siding squares. If one carton provides 200 sq ft of effective coverage, divide 1,496 by 200 and round up to 8 cartons. Metric example: a 12 m × 9 m building with 3 m walls has 126 m² of rectangular wall area. Two 9 m gables rising 1.8 m add 16.2 m². Subtract 20 m² of openings and add 10% waste for 134.42 m². At 18.5 m² per purchasing unit, round up to 8 units. Trim example: two 10.5 ft starter runs with 12 ft usable stock and 0% trim waste require 1 + 1 = 2 pieces. Four 10.5 ft corners with 10 ft usable posts require 4 × 2 = 8 pieces, including in measured-area mode when that corner height is entered. Product coverage, deductions and waste are examples only.

Accuracy & Assumptions

  • Every included elevation has been measured, and complex areas are entered separately or represented by accurate area totals.
  • Opening deductions include only areas that the selected layout and estimating method should exclude.
  • Effective coverage matches the exact purchasing unit and price basis entered.
  • Waste is applied once before whole siding units round up.
  • Starter strip and J-channel runs come from a project-specific elevation and trim sketch.
  • Corner counts, wall height and usable stock length match the intended corner-post system.
  • Metric product coverage and stock lengths use native supplier information rather than awkward converted retail sizes when available.
  • Final wall assembly, flashing, drainage, fastening, fire, wind and clearance requirements will be confirmed separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much siding I need?

Add rectangular wall and gable areas, subtract appropriate openings, add waste, then divide by the exact siding product’s effective coverage per purchasing unit and round up.

How many square feet are in a square of siding?

One siding square equals 100 sq ft. A square is an industry area unit and may not equal one carton or package.

How do I calculate a gable for siding?

Multiply gable base width by gable rise and divide by 2. Calculate each triangular gable separately when dimensions differ.

Should I subtract windows and doors from siding area?

Deduction practices vary with opening size, panel layout, offcut reuse and supplier method. Measure openings, but confirm whether and how much to deduct for the selected product and layout.

How much waste should I add for siding?

A simple verified layout may need less, while gables, short walls, many openings and detailed cuts can need more. Ten percent is a common planning input, but a panel layout and supplier guidance are more reliable.

What does effective coverage per siding unit mean?

It is the usable installed area provided by the exact carton, panel, bundle or package after profile, exposure and laps are considered.

How do I estimate starter strip?

Enter each independent starter strip run separately. Add waste once to each run, divide by usable stock length and round up before summing. Openings, porches and transitions can change the run.

How do I estimate J-channel?

Measure the actual trim routes around openings, along approved rake details and at terminations. Enter separate runs; apply waste and round up to usable stock pieces for each run before summing.

Does the calculator estimate corner posts?

Yes. It rounds common corner height up to whole usable stock pieces for each inside and outside corner. Measured-area mode has a separate common-height input. Estimate differing heights separately.

Can I use this for vinyl, fiber-cement, wood or engineered siding?

The area method can support different materials when you enter the exact effective coverage and purchasing unit. Trim, waste, fastening and installation rules remain product-specific.

Does the estimate include house wrap and flashing?

No. Weather-resistive barriers, flashing, drainage accessories, fasteners, mounting blocks and specialty trim require separate product-specific takeoffs.

Can I estimate material cost?

Yes. Enter available prices for the siding unit and trim pieces. The result excludes labor, tax, delivery, removal, repairs and unlisted materials.

Can I use Metric measurements?

Yes. Metric mode uses m and m², native Metric stock lengths and product coverage. It also shows the 100 sq ft siding-square equivalent for industry reference.

This calculator provides a preliminary siding and trim material estimate only. It does not create an elevation or panel cut layout; select siding, exposure, wall assembly, weather-resistive barrier, drainage plane, flashing, fastening, clearances, fire resistance, wind design or structural details; inspect substrate or concealed damage; or determine code compliance. Products, effective coverage, waste, trim, accessories and installation requirements vary. Exterior work involves serious ladder, scaffold, fall, electrical, sharp-edge, silica, lead, asbestos, overhead and weather hazards. Follow applicable code, approved plans and manufacturer instructions, and have qualified siding, building-envelope and construction professionals confirm measurements, wall assembly, flashing, substrate, products and final quantities before ordering or installation.
