Square Footage Calculator

Calculate room or project area using Imperial or Metric dimensions.

Calculate one rectangular area or multiple identical sections using decimal feet or meters. Switching units converts the same measurements. Both modes show square feet, square meters and square yards. Calculate different-size rooms separately and add their areas.

Measurement System

Enter one rectangle. Use the count only for sections with exactly the same length and width. Changing units converts your measurements and keeps the same area.

Use decimal feet: feet + inches ÷ 12. For example, 12 ft 6 in = 12.5 ft, not 12.6 ft. Convert both dimensions before multiplying.

Your Estimate

Total Square Feet

120.00 ft²

Square Yards

13.333333 yd²

Square Meters

11.148365 m²

Area = length × width × identical section count. Conversions use 1 ft = 0.3048 m and 1 yd² = 9 ft². Results display up to six decimal places; inputs are not rounded before calculating. Material waste and package rounding are separate.

Results Actions

For different-size rooms or an L-shaped space, calculate non-overlapping rectangles separately and add their areas. Include closets or alcoves when they receive the material; do not count a shared area twice.

Keep length and width in the same unit before multiplying. Converted results are rounded for display.

How to Use the Square Footage Calculator

  1. 1Choose Imperial or Metric units; switching converts your current dimensions.
  2. 2Enter decimal feet or meters. For feet and inches, use feet + inches ÷ 12: 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft.
  3. 3Enter the number of identical rooms or sections.
  4. 4Review the primary area and secondary converted results.
  5. 5For irregular spaces, calculate smaller rectangles separately and add their areas.

Square Footage and Area Formulas

  1. 1Area of one rectangle = length × width.
  2. 2Total area = area of one rectangle × number of identical rooms or sections.
  3. 3Square yards = square feet ÷ 9 in either mode.
  4. 4Square meters = square feet × 0.09290304.
  5. 5Square feet = square meters ÷ 0.09290304.

Example Calculation

A 12 ft 6 in × 10 ft 3 in room becomes 12.5 × 10.25 = 128.125 sq ft. That is 11.903202 m², displayed as 11.903202 m², or about 14.236111 sq yd. Switching to Metric converts the dimensions to 3.81 m × 3.1242 m and retains the same area. Two identical rooms total 256.25 sq ft. Different-size rooms must be calculated separately.

Accuracy & Assumptions

  • Results depend on the accuracy of the entered dimensions.
  • Length and width must use the same measurement system.
  • Imperial mode uses feet as inputs; Metric mode uses meters.
  • Conversions use exactly 1 ft = 0.3048 m, so 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m²; 1 square yard equals 9 square feet.
  • Actual usable area may vary due to walls, closets or irregular room shapes.
  • Irregular spaces should be divided into smaller rectangles and added together.
  • Verify all measurements on site before ordering flooring or other materials.
  • Check supplier packaging and pricing units before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I enter feet and inches?

Convert inches to a fraction of a foot: feet + inches ÷ 12. Enter 12.5 for 12 ft 6 in and 10.25 for 10 ft 3 in. Decimal feet are not a feet-and-inches notation.

Does switching units change my room?

No. The calculator converts your current dimensions and retains the identical-section count. The physical area stays the same; displayed results are rounded.

Does the section count work for different-size rooms?

No. The count multiplies one rectangle by the number of identical sections. For different rooms or L-shaped layouts, calculate each non-overlapping rectangle separately and add the results.

How do I calculate square footage?

Measure length and width in feet, then multiply them. For example, 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 sq ft.

How do I calculate square meters?

Measure length and width in meters, then multiply them. For example, 4 m × 3 m = 12 m².

How do I convert square meters to square feet?

Multiply square meters by 10.7639. The calculator performs this conversion automatically in Metric mode.

How do I convert square feet to square yards?

Divide square feet by 9. The calculator shows square yards in either measurement system.

How do I measure an irregular room?

Divide the room into smaller rectangles, calculate length × width for each rectangle and add all of the areas together.

Should closets and alcoves be included?

Include every space that will receive the material you are estimating. Measure closets, alcoves and other sections separately when their shapes differ.

Can I calculate multiple identical rooms?

Yes. Enter the number of identical rooms or sections and the calculator multiplies the single-room area by that count.

This calculator provides an area estimate based on the dimensions entered. Measure irregular spaces as separate rectangles, verify all dimensions on site and confirm whether product coverage or pricing uses square feet, square yards or square meters before purchasing.
